Food Allergies
I’ve heard that it’s fairly common for lupus patients to have a lot of food allergies. I know my wife has a bunch of them. It’s not a huge deal, but it is one of those things that we have to always be aware of when we are out to eat. You would be surprised how many things have nuts in them, especially desserts. Getting a salad is also usually an adventure. Shredded carrots are evil.
Here’s the list to the best of my knowledge:
- NUTS except peanuts but I think they are actually a legume so they don’t count
- RAW VEGETABLES lettuce seems to be safe but raw carrots are bad news
- AVOCADOS no guacamole for you dear
- MELONS this one makes me very sad because I love melons
- KIWIS strawberries are fine, so what’s wrong with these guys?
I’m probably forgetting some of them, but that’s most of them. We try and avoid them as best we can, but I don’t want to remove them entirely from the house because of the kids. Jenny will occasionally take allergy medicine if she really wants something, but that’s not usually a good idea. Does anyone else out there deal with this?

Did these allergies come about after Jenny’s diagnosis, or did she have them before? There have been times when I’ve eaten seafood and my lips would swell up. This only happens sometimes. The very first time it happened was a few years after my lupus diagnosis. I ate a crab-salad sandwich at work, which the cafeteria said it was immitation not real crabmeat. The other few occassions was after eating shrimp, but it didn’t happen everytime I ate it. Also, when I’ve had some dental procedures done, I had to pre-medicate with an antibiotic for a heart murmur, and I noticed after the procedure my lips would be a little swollen. I don’t know if this is due to the antibiotics or the latex gloves the dentist uses. I’m not sure if this is an allergy, but I’m guessing it is. I know I should consult a doctor to find out for sure, but it hasn’t happened in quite a few years now. I will be sure to ask about it next time though.
I think the food allergies started around the same time as her diagnosis, which happened in her early teens.
Hi there, I can understand the food allergies. I have weird reactions to medications. SOme doctors think I’m nuts when I say what my side affects are. One med made me feel like I had morning sickness all day, Da Ja Vu
I am awarding you the spreader of love blog award, you can pick up the link on my site. Thanks so much for help our lupus famlies.
Chronic chick@: I appreciate the thought, but I don’t really feel like I spread much love. I feel like I just barely cope, and I’m angry a lot. I try and do the best I can.
Your site looks fabulous, btw. That’s gotta be a lot of work.
